HOW IMPORTANT IS DOCTRINE?

by Elder Lin Brown

Prov 4:2 For I give you good doctrine, forsake ye not my law.

Mat 7:28 And it came to pass, when Jesus had ended these sayings, the people were astonished at his doctrine:

Mat 16:12 Then understood they how that he bade them not beware of the leaven of bread, but of the doctrine of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees.

Mat 22:33 And when the multitude heard this, they were astonished at his doctrine.

Mark 1:22 And they were astonished at his doctrine: for he taught them as one that had authority, and not as the scribes.

John 7:16&17 Jesus answered them, and said, My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me. If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself.

Acts 2:42 And they continued steadfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.

Rom 6:17 But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you.

Rom 16:17 Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them.

1 Tim 1:3 As I besought thee to abide still at Ephesus, when I went into Macedonia, that thou mightest charge some that they teach no other doctrine,

1 Tim 4:13&16 Till I come, give attendance to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine. Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee.

1 Tim 5:17 Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honour, especially they who labour in the word and doctrine.

1 Tim 6:1&3 Let as many servants as are under the yoke count their own masters worthy of all honour, that the name of God and his doctrine be not blasphemed. If any man teach otherwise, and consent not to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness;

2 Tim 3:16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:

2 Tim 4:2-4 Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.

Titus 1:9 Holding fast the faithful word as he hath been taught, that he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convince the gainsayers.

Titus 2:1,7&8 But speak thou the things which become sound doctrine: In all things showing thyself a pattern of good works: in doctrine showing uncorruptness, gravity, sincerity, Sound speech, that cannot be condemned; that he that is of the contrary part may be ashamed, having no evil thing to say of you.

2 John 1:9&10 Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son. If there come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into your house, neither bid him God speed:

Rev 2:14&15 But I have a few things against thee, because thou hast there them that hold the doctrine of Balaam, who taught Balac to cast a stumblingblock before the children of Israel, to eat things sacrificed unto idols, and to commit fornication. So hast thou also them that hold the doctrine of the Nicolaitanes, which thing I hate.

As you can see from the verses above the Bible does not hold doctrine as an unimportant issue. In fact it says that false doctrine is evil and it should be rejected by the children of God. Why then is it not important to most churches today? You hear from all sides, don’t preach doctrine because it will cause people to not love each other and it will cause them to be against them who don’t believe their doctrine. All over the Bible we are told to have the true doctrine, because if we hold false doctrine or no doctrine then we don’t know the living and true God. God has revealed Himself in what the Bible calls the faith of the elect. It is the viewpoint of this fellowship that we have had the faith of the elect revealed to us . The doctrine that we believe is the same that Jesus taught and Paul preached as well as all of the authors in the both Old Testament and the New Testament. The faith of God’s elect is a precious doctrine and deserves our utmost reverence and care. I pray that you cherish the truth that you hear from our pulpit each Sunday and that the Lord has caused you to see that it is a very rare thing to hear the Old Paths as they are also called. Yes, there are others who still adhere to the Old paths and still walk in the light of God’s Sovereign Grace and still preach the truths that we hold dear and preach faithfully each Sunday. May the Lord continue to give us the freedom to preach these old truths that so many have found to be out of style and inconvenient today. Denomination after denomination who had their start in the doctrines of the Old Paths have long since departed and have found a more popular and convenient way to worship their god. Unfortunately the more popular and convenient way is the another gospel that the apostle said was accursed by God. They have followed false doctrine that reveals a false god and whose end will be damnation. May the Lord be pleased to keep our faith on the straight and narrow path -the Old Paths of the doctrine of the Absolute Sovereignty of God.
